1. DIYPhotography
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court upheld a $750 copyright judgment against former Congressman Steve King for using the 'Success Kid' meme without permission in his 2020 campaign. The case centers on a 2007 photo taken by Laney Griner of her 11-month-old son, Sammy. Griner sued for infringement, leading to the Iowa jury's decision. The court rejected King's 'fair use' defense, stating that widespread meme use does not justify copyright violation, especially when used commercially.
2. PetaPixel
OpenAI's CTO posits that AI could reduce certain creative jobs while also democratizing creativity by making it more accessible to everyone. He acknowledges uncertainty about AI's overall impact on employment, foreseeing both job losses and new opportunities. The winners of the Hasselblad Master 2023 competition in Landscape, Architecture, Portrait, Art, Street Photography, and Project categories have been announced. This year, the photo competition received a record 85,000 global submissions, a 35% increase from 2021.
